NEWTOWN - The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection allowed Newtown Transload and the Housatonic Railroad Co. years to comply with state regulations, but it seems they never quite did.
On Dec. 27, First Selectman Pat Llodra announced she had learned the Hawleyville rail solid waste transfer facility, owned by the railroad and operated by Transload, had ceased operation. She didn't say why.
As recently as last month, the controversial facility had several operational and storm water management violations, including incorrect signs and types of materials, said DEEP's Robert Isner. Continued
