County considers backing group trying to save railroad

Madison County is considering whether to throw its support behind a regional group trying to halt the abandonment of the railroad line between Canton and Grenada.
In September of last year, Grenada Railway LLC sought permission from the National Surface Transportation Board to abandon the 83-miles of track and sell it for scrap. However, the company withdrew the proposal in November before a public hearing on the issue.
The entire Grenada Line runs 175 miles from the Tennessee border to Canton and many economic development officials in counties along the line fear the implications of its closure. Continued
