Panhandle Line critical, rail commission told

NEWARK, OH - Licking County officials made their pitch Wednesday for continued open access to the Panhandle Rail Line, a 160-mile railroad from Columbus to the West Virginia state line near Steubenville.
The Ohio Rail Development Commission came to The Works for the second of two public input meetings about a proposed 25-year lease of the line that would continue the partnership between the state and Genesee & Wyoming Railroad.
The current five-year lease expires in June, which will be 20 years since the state stepped in at the request of communities and shippers to save the line from partial abandonment by then-owner Conrail in 1992. Continued
