It’s a Southern Pacific tradition

Sunset tinted the tawny-colored Goleta Depot golden.
But as darkness fell, lights began to twinkle in an upstairs bay window of the historic two-story structure at 300 N. Los Carneros Road, a short distance from Highway 101.
Placing a lighted Christmas tree in the window has been done annually since the depot, built in 1901, was moved crosstown from its original site along the Southern Pacific tracks to its present setting in Lake Los Carneros County Park in 1981.
The tree-lighting revives a practice by SP stationmasters of putting Christmas trees in windows facing the tracks for passengers and crews in passing trains to enjoy through the holiday season. Continued
