ETSU Railroad Museum to hold December Heritage Days early

JOHNSON CITY — East Tennessee State University’s George L. Carter Railroad Museum will hold its December Heritage Day on Saturday, Dec. 17, when the museum will honor one of the most visible railroads of the past, the New York Central Lines.
The event, entitled “A New York State of Mind,” focuses upon a railroad nicknamed “The Great Steel Fleet,” which extended from Chicago, Peoria, St. Louis, Indianapolis and Cincinnati in the Midwest to Boston and into Canada.
A fierce rival of the Pennsylvania Railroad, the New York Central was known for its streamlined 20th Century, Empire State Express, Mercury and Pacemaker trains, which often exceeded speeds of 100 miles per hour, even back in the 1930s. Continued
