Earphones are cited in many railroad deaths

Because of the popularity and portability of MP3 players, the devices have added to the distractions contributing to fatalities of pedestrians on and near railroad tracks, said Marmie Edwards, an official with Operation Lifesaver, an Alexandria, Va.-based nonprofit dedicated to railroad-safety education.
"(Pedestrians) think that they're going to be OK, but it's easier to underestimate a train. If someone does that and has earbuds in their ears, they're really cutting their chances to survive," Edwards said. Continued
