Rural Retreat depot is saved from the saw




RURAL RETREAT - Scott Mecimore stood close to where O. Winston Link positioned his camera on Christmas Eve 1957.
Link's photograph of The Birmingham Special pulling past as a station agent raises his lantern ended up in the Library of Congress, an iconic image of the end of steam railroading in America.
The Rural Retreat depot was already 91 years old when Link dramatically lit its square lines and Gothic ornamentation for his late-night shoot. Continued
