New bridge for major railroad line

PETERSBURG - As part of the major railroad line that connects Virginia with the Northeast Corridor, Norfolk Southern is building a new passenger rail line from Hamtpon Roads through Petersburg. City officials say that local residents will face only minor inconveniences for a good part of 2012 when a new bridge will replace the old railroad bridge on Johnson Road.
"There is a lot going on with railroads in Petersburg, and there will be more in the future," said Michael Berdell, director of Public Works with the City of Petersburg, at an information event for residents at Petersburg High School on Monday.
Mark Heckler with Norfolk Southern Railroad said this project will connect the Petersburg area to the Northeast Corridor, where Amtrak operates its busiest passenger line today. Continued
