Local man recalls career spent transporting US nukes by railroad

Mike Chavez spent the better part of 29 years transporting one of the country’s worst-kept secrets on cross-country rail lines that started at the Pantex plant.
In 1974, right out of the U.S. Marine Corps, a 22-year-old Chavez arrived in Amarillo and threw himself into a six-week driving and shooting training course.
“I moved here with everything in my car, and the trunk was empty,” said Chavez, now 60. Continued
