Gary airport nails one railroad agreement, two more in wings

The Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority on Monday approved one of three "must-have" agreements with railroads to keep its expansion project on track.
By a 3-1 vote, the board voted to approve an agreement with Norfolk Southern Corp. that will allow the Fort Wayne line tracks north of the airport to be taken out of service and improvements made on others.
Last May, three railroads signed a memorandum of understanding with the airport on moving tracks to make way for expansion of its main runway, airport attorney Patrick Lyp told authority board members. But the airport still needed to nail down separate final agreements with each railroad detailing just how the work will be done. Continued

  1. I don't understand why they need to negotiate with the railroads at all. The PEOPLE of Gary own that land and the railroads lease it with our permission. A little eminent domain could solve this right away.
