Fall foliage leaves Staten Island Railway commuters in the lurch

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Late trains are causing many residents who use the Staten Island Railway to miss their connecting boats at the St. George Ferry Terminal adding time and frustration to their already long commutes, and their only option is to take an earlier train.
The SIR has been experiencing five to 10 minute delays -- just long enough for passengers to miss a connecting ferry -- because of leaves falling on the tracks, said Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Kevin Ortiz.
The MTA does not communicate with the city Department of Transportation -- the agency that runs the ferry -- on scheduling issues, Ortiz said. So commuters should not expect ferry captains to hold the boat for delayed trains. Continued
