For much of the 1900s, Caboose No. 180 trailed trains through the south-central United States as part of the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, better known as the Frisco Railway.
But No. 180 will spend much of the 2000s as part of a historical exhibit near the Santa Maria Transit Center.
The classic wooden caboose and a Sacramento Northern Railroad boxcar joined a Union Sugar No. 1 steam locomotive on a short piece of rail Friday between the Transit Center and the Souza Center — Santa Maria-Bonita School District administrative offices — near the intersection of East Boone and South Miller streets.
